Montessori Parenting Tips: Help Me Do It by Myself

A Note from Kaltun

“Help Me Do It by Myself”

October 20, 2026

“Help me do it by myself” is a simple but powerful message that captures how children learn and grow through everyday experiences.

As parents, we naturally want to help our children. We tie their shoes, clean up after them, and sometimes complete tasks because it is simply faster. But when we give children the opportunity to try things on their own, we give them something far more valuable: confidence, patience, and a sense of accomplishment.

One of my favorite Montessori parenting tips is also one of the simplest: give children the time and opportunity to try. Small everyday experiences can become meaningful learning moments.

8 Simple Ways to Help Your Child Learn by Doing

Give your child extra time to complete everyday tasks.

Encourage them to dress themselves, even if it takes longer. Offer simple, weather-appropriate clothing choices so they can participate in deciding what to wear.

Invite them to help prepare snacks and complete simple tasks.

Let them clean up their toys and activities.

Involve them in everyday family responsibilities appropriate for their age.

Show them how to do something, then let them try.

Allow mistakes to become learning opportunities.

Celebrate their effort, not just the outcome.

What Does Research Tell Us?

Research on Montessori education suggests that hands-on activities, child-directed learning, and thoughtfully prepared environments can support children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development.

A Final Thought

The next time your child struggles to put on their shoes, pour a glass of water, or complete a simple task, resist the urge to step in immediately. Give them time, offer encouragement, and watch their confidence grow.

Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give our children is the opportunity to discover what they are capable of.
